Bat Trang Ceramic Village

Located in Gia Lam District, about 13 km from central Hanoi on the eastern bank of the Red River, Bat Trang Ceramic Village is one of Vietnam’s best-known traditional craft villages. The village has been associated with ceramic and porcelain production since the 14th century and is famous throughout Vietnam for its distinctive handmade pottery.

Today, Bat Trang remains an active centre of ceramic production. Many local workshops have replaced traditional coal-fired kilns with gas and electric kilns to help reduce pollution and improve production efficiency. At the entrance to the village, you will find numerous shops selling locally made Bat Trang ceramics alongside imported products, including some Chinese ceramics.

Dong Ho Traditional Painting Village

Dong Ho Traditional Painting Village is located in Song Ho Commune, Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh Province, approximately 35 km east of Hanoi on the southern bank of the Duong River.

The village is famous for its traditional Vietnamese folk woodcut paintings, although the exact origins of the craft are difficult to establish. The tradition has been passed down through many generations, with families preserving the techniques and artistic styles of Dong Ho printing.

Dong Ho paintings are traditionally associated with Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, when families display them to bring happiness, prosperity, and good fortune. The paintings are known for their humorous subjects, optimistic themes, and strong use of bright colours such as red, yellow, and white.

Although the traditional painting industry has declined considerably, Dong Ho remains an interesting cultural destination for a day motorbike tour from Hanoi. Many local families have turned to other forms of work, including the production of votive paper, which has become an important source of income in the village.

Van Phuc Silk Village

Located only about 10 km west of central Hanoi, Van Phuc Silk Village is one of Vietnam’s most famous traditional silk-producing villages. Silk weaving has been practiced here for centuries, and the village remains an important centre for Vietnamese silk production.

Van Phuc is known for its smooth, lightweight, and attractive silk products, which are suitable for Vietnam’s changing climate. Visitors can explore local workshops, see traditional weaving techniques, and browse shops selling a wide range of Vietnamese silk products.

But Thap Pagoda

But Thap Pagoda, also known as Dien Ung Pagoda, is located in But Thap Village, Dinh To Commune, Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh Province, approximately 40 km from Hanoi.

The pagoda is one of the most important examples of traditional Buddhist architecture in Northern Vietnam. Its origins date back many centuries, and the complex is particularly famous for its elegant Eastern architectural style, peaceful gardens, carved wooden statues, and traditional Buddhist artwork.

One of the most remarkable works of art here is the famous Thousand-Eyed and Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara statue, an impressive wooden sculpture representing compassion and the ability to see and help people in need.

A visit to But Thap Pagoda can easily be combined with nearby traditional villages and rural roads, making it an excellent cultural destination for a one-day motorbike tour from Hanoi.
